MATEMÁTICAS MONUMENTALES

Jewish Quarter I

The Old Jewish Quarter of Cáceres, with its narrow streets, whitewashed houses and bright flowers in its windows or balconies, stands out for its monumental beauty, only comparable to the nobility of this ancient town.

It is not known the exact date when the Jews settled in Caceres, there are no written nor archaeological sources that may suggest a Jewish presence in Roman times. What seems certain, as it appears in the 1229 Charter of Caceres, is that during the long Muslim domination of Hizn Qazris (Caceres), the Jews were present in society, even with a role of significant relevance.

There is a six-pointed geometric Star of David on each plaque bearing the names of the streets. It is a symbol of the Jewish community and had, originally, a magical sense: it was placed on the walls to ward off evil spirits and even used to represent the connection between heaven and earth.

The second figure of the sequence below is the Star of David. The first figure has 3 sides and 3 peaks, the second has 12 sides and 6 peaks, the third has 48 sides and 18 picks and so on. How many peaks would the fifth figure have?
